Words by Rathana Norng,
From having zero knowledge about how the fashion industry works to building my own brand Krin Collective from the stretch. Here’s how my experience at The Fashion Institute prepped me for the challenges and navigated me step by step to my dream job. Lady boss, that is.
Trained by The Best
What I loved most about the course was that all the trainers are experts in the field. They’ve been working in the fashion industry for years across high fashion magazines, styling, PR, production, buying, social media agencies, just to name a few.
I was able to absorb the profound knowledge not just by the book but through their enriching experiences. I think it’s extremely important to learn from someone who has worked in the industry for a long time because they’re able to provide you with how the industry started and where it is shifting. More importantly, sharing creative ways to work with clients.
I attended so many guest speakers’ events! My favourite one was Bec and Bridge, the two inspiring founders came to TFI to give a talk on how they started this remarkable business and what encouraged them to do so. I genuinely think that we have to get inspired in order for us to tap into our most potential bits and I am thankful that TFI gave me this opportunity to listen, to lean closer and get inspired.
From Marie Claire to Bassike to Sir
This is the most important bits of the course for me. I interned for so many companies and all were in different departments. Why? Because I wanted to know how everything works.
To my juniors, if you are not sure where you’re heading, try different things. The internships lead me to the right people, the right paths, valuable experiences and the most intimate insights on how the fashion industry works. And if you’re looking to work for your favourite designers at Fashion Week, you’re in the right place. Take as many internships as you can, it will help you tremendously in the future.
I want to thank my TFI family for helping me achieve my dream. For those of you who are looking to get wonderful work experiences that will lead you to find the best career in the fashion industry, I can’t recommend TFI enough!
